around the country. Two years after the overthrow of

Chavez Visit's Haiti
Venezuelan
President Hugo Chavez made his first visit to Haiti Monday
promising more that 20 million dollars in aid for various
health and education projects. Haiti was the last country
on Chavez's presidential trip that included five countries
and shadowed political enemy President George Bush's five
country tour of Latin America. Upon his arrival thousands
of jubilant slum dwellers greeted Chavez outside the
airport. Not one to miss out on a moment with his admirers
Chavez leaned out of his SUV grabbing hands and bumping
fist with people as he drove by. The elated crowds chanted
"Long Live Chavez, and Down With Bush," as the
presidential motorcade moved through the sea of people.
Meeting with President Preval at the Venezuelan embassy
the two presidents enjoyed small talk and met with a unit
of Venezuelan army engineers who are working on various
development projects in the capital. Chavez said the he
was extremely moved by the emotional response from the
people of Haiti and added later that it was his country's
duty to help the beleaguered nation citing several
historical connections. Venezuela is not a member of the
9,000 strong United Nations mission in Haiti, aimed at
restoring order and a functioning democratic government to
the country. In fact Chavez was openly opposed to the
controversial departure of former President Aristide and
the U.S. sponsored interim government. However, since Rene
Preval was elected in President in 2006 the Chavez regime
has enjoyed warm relations with Haiti and offered millions
of dollars in aid. This time around Venezeula is offering
nearly 20 million dollars in health and education
resources to Haiti. Last year Haiti joined a Venezuelan
oil subsidy program called Petrocaribe, which provides
preferential payment options for financially strapped
countries like Haiti Preval has said his country saves
nearly 150 millon dollars a year because of the program.
Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere and
desperately needs all the help it can get to recover from
years of violence and political turmoil. Officials also
said in a joint aid mission Cuba and Venezuela plan to
provide five electric power plants to Haiti which suffers
from chronically short energy supplies. |

Royal Caribbean Voyager- Day 6- Arrival in Labadee
Royal
Caribbean Voyager: Labadee, Haiti introduction to the
island taken from the balcony of our suite. I think I
mistook the ''private beach" advertising message to
mean a "private island" off of Haiti. In fact,
Labadee is really just a long and beautiful peninsula of
Haiti. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western
Hemisphere, and Royal Caribbean has greatly increased the
standard of living in this section of the country. The
average annual Haitian income is $250; Haitian employees
of RCCL make that every two weeks! It gives perspective:
wages that would be considered sub-minimum wage in the USA
make a Haitian an extremely wealthy person |

» The
Creole Pig was once the mainstay of the economy of rural
Haiti. It served as the farmer's hedge against bad
weather, crop failure and all sorts of unforeseen
occurrences. In 1982, the US government responded to an
African Swine Flu outbreak in the Dominican Republic by
ordering the complete eradication of all of Haiti's Creole
pigs. Produced by Grassroots International - a U.S. based
social justice organization partnering with the National
Congress of Papaye Peasant Movement (MPNKP) in Haiti -
this video tells the story of the eradication, the
hardship it caused, and the efforts of Haitian
organizations to reintroduce this key economic asset |
